The Blue Umbrella

Saschka Unseld

Working as a cinematographer for Pixar, with credits on blockbusters ‘Toy Story 3’, ‘Brave’ and ‘Cars 2’, Saschka Unseld had the idea for ‘The Blue Umbrella’, an animated short which would become the company’s first-ever photo-real film, delighting audiences around the world as it preceded theatre screenings of ‘Monsters University’ in 2013. This short featured new techniques in photorealistic lighting, shading and compositing. As with other Pixar shorts, the film is absent of dialogue and long on the use of visual and musical cues. Saschka once described the film as ‘a love declaration to the rain’.
