X Japan was formed by childhood friends, Yoshiki and Toshi who ignited a musical revolution in Japan during the late 80’s with their melodic metal and flamboyant fashion. In the fall of ’97, at the height of their success, X broke up – devastating millions of fans. Twenty years after the tragedy-fueled split, Director Stephen Kijak’s traces the arc of X – from phenomenal origins through tumultuous super-stardom and premature dissolution up to present day, as the band prepares to reunite for a show at the legendary Madison Square Garden while struggling to reconcile a past yet haunted by suicide, injury and cultish extremism with the insatiable thirst for perfection.

“Kijak’s proven affinity to interestingly portray a variety of music-related non-fiction tales shines here partly because of the exuberance of his subjects…. Kijak’s entertaining and potent portrait is bound to become a favorite among fans and to persuade others to join the ranks of those under the loud spell of X Japan.”

“Their story, although it’s true, flirts with Spinal Tap territory, comprising crazy costumes, suicides, a brainwashing cult, and an enigmatic, androgynous, sensitive leader called Yoshiki (“his entire body was emanating death!”) who flirts with baring his soul for the cameras he’s clearly in control of…. There’s enough in We Are X to satisfy the band’s hordes of fervent fans, while still impressing those who have never heard of X Japan; some concert sequences are crazy, magnificent, rock and roll madness.”
